Put on the armor of God every morning as you rise. Piece by piece, prepare yourself for the battles to come. Always ready, always faithful. At any moment a war can rage around you, it can affect every aspect of your life. The belt of truth is the first piece of the whole armor of God, we are to buckle the belt around our waist and actively seek the truth and use it. The belt guards us against the lies and deceptions of the enemy, without the truth we are left vulnerable.
Breastplate of Righteousness
To be righteous is to do what is right in God’s eyes. The breastplate is to protect the heart, to keep it pure. It is specially designed by God to protect our heart and soul from evil and deception. Our own righteous acts are no match for Satan’s attacks. The breastplate of righteousness has Christ’s name stamped on it, as though He said, “Your righteousness isn’t sufficient to protect you. Wear mine.”
Shoes of the Gospel of Peace
Equally important, the shoes allow us to walk without fear of pain, so the gospel of peace allows us to deal with painful trials in our lives without fear, knowing that what awaits is greater than anything we could possibly suffer in this world. Having our shoes on, we are ready to move, to do our part to spread the gospel to others.
Shield of Faith
The shield of faith not only defends our whole body but also our armor. It shields us from the fiery darts of the enemy that come our way on a regular basis. Satan tries to implant these darts in your mind to create uncertainty. They are doubt, delay, discouragement, depression, difficulty.
Helmet of Salvation
Salvation is the deliverance from sin and its consequences. In the same way the shield of faith, the helmet provides protection against these sins that would destroy the mind. And as the other pieces of spiritual armor, it is given to us by God to protect us from the evils that loom around us. The evils that try to take away the good and make us sin against God.
Sword of the Spirit
The first five pieces of armor are defensive pieces, that we can use to defend against spiritual attack. The sword is an offensive piece of armor, it is the word of God. Train and be skilled in the use of the sword by reading the Bible and meditating on the words of God. The author of Hebrews tells us that we must become gradually more knowledgeable and skilled in the Word of God until we are able to use it to discern good from evil.
